A repository for the main archaeological artefacts unearthed in Gozo and Comino,the exhibition illustrate chronologically the history of the islands from pre-historic to early modern times. Oldest and most interesting are the Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, mostly pottery and relics from Ggantija Temples; followed by the Phoenician artefacts, including a burial urn. The museum also displays amphorae from the Roman period and an outstanding collection of elegant jewellery and quaint jewellery boxes. The 'Xlendi room' houses speci- mens lifted from underwater wrecks of Greek and Roman times recovered from the bay in 1961.
The Old Prison

The Old Prison, in the Citadel, overlooks Cathedral Square and was origi- nally connected to the Law Courts next door. It served as a prison from the mid-16th century until the early 20th century. The individual cells, next to a central courtYard, have been well preserved in their original state. The most interesting feature is the graffiti that cover the walls, considered as the largest collection of historical graffiti in the islands, dating back to different periods. They represent ships, handprints, crosses, names, dates, games, animal and human figures. They provide a fascining insight into the lives of those kept behind bars here. The entrance hall houses a permanent exhibition on fortifications to be found on the island of Gozo.
